The onset of fall means the kids are going back to school and parents everywhere are about to get their houses back. Once you dig out from under the avalanche of beach toys and pool games, what can you do to update your space for the seasons to come? Here are just a few of the soon-to-be trends furniture manufacturers are hoping to see in your home this fall and winter.
Let’s hear it for the curves
When it comes to upholstered furniture, some lines are still successfully blending strong geometric lines with soft fabrics as the ideal mixture of masculine and feminine features. However, we are now seeing more offerings that lean toward much more well-rounded curves. We love how the Clubby Chair from Drexel pairs unapologetic rounded edges with a strong foundation. It’s the perfect foil when you’re looking to soften a room without changing every piece.
And even more curves!
Not content to stay confined to upholstery, rounded lines are showing up on just about everything – from mirrors and art to vanities and chests. There are subtle curves, like those shown on this Agustin Mirror from Uttermost and then those that go for straight up bold. You can also get this look by adding a large-scale accessory with dramatic curves and placing it at the focal point of your room.
The Rise of Natural
When you think of natural textures, soft isn’t necessarily the first thing that comes to mind. Rocky shores, coarse sand and unfinished driftwood may spring to mind when we think of sections of our coastline and when we try to bring the feel of our landscapes indoors. Yet there are softer takes on natural finishes that blend well with the open spaces and lighter finishes of California coastal style. We like the touch of rattan on these Lexington Merrick swivel chairs paired with the distressed metal top of Lexington’s Hidden Lake Bistro Table.
Retro chic
But before you go too natural, don’t forget to throw in a nod to all things glitz and glam and retro chic. The wave of nostalgia for styles from both the 70s and the 80s (along with an 80s nod to art deco – just think Miami Vice) are staging yet another strong comeback – just look at the hype that the much awaited revamped Magnum P.I. series is getting virtually everywhere. The retro love is showing up subtly in plush rugs and velvet fabrics and making a splash in abstract and art deco forms. To get the look without going too over the top, select a statement shag rug in a vibrant hue, cover a dramatically curved accent chair in eye-popping velvet or opt for a decadent accent table or ottoman in a bold geometric shape with a dash of silver or gold – or both – like these tables from Bernhardt’s Profile collection beautifully demonstrate.
No matter which of these trendy styles appeals to you, stop by one of our West Coast Thomasville showrooms so our designers can help you bring it to life in your home – and blend it seamlessly with your existing style.
