London-based contemporary womenswear brand Rixo has unveiled a 10-piecesustainable capsule collection, which will offer its consumer “consciouslycreative, one-off, original pieces that will last”.
Each piece from the ‘Rixo Recycle’ collection has been made in afemale-owned factory in India, using recyclable materials and offcuts offabric that would have otherwise been wasted. As the collection utilisesoff-cut material, some pieces in the range are limited to just 1 or 2pieces, while others have 50 pieces, as the brand highlights how each pieceis “completely unique”.
Commenting on the collection, Rixo co-founder, Orlagh Mccloskey, said ina statement: “On a trip to India I saw the prints lying there and in myalmost magpie spirit I questioned what they were, to my absolute shock Iwas told that all the fabric was to be destroyed so I gathered themimmediately and asked if we could utilise them into some special Rixogarments.
“Knowing each piece couldn’t be replicated our factory manager wasslightly worried but I just told them to make what they could, hence someitems being so limited and simply only 2 units being made.”
The collection has been designed to reduce Rixo's environmental impact, added the brand, not just through materials used, but also the process, asit demonstrates the full supply chain life cycle in one place, fromcomponent sourcing to production. This the brand adds showcases low impactmanufacturing and reduced transportation.
The limited collection consists of timeless shapes that continue thevintage spirit Rixo embodies, featuring floral hand produce woodblockprints, that “were found in the corner of a room” have been utilised as thebase of this collection.
Rixo co-founder, Henrietta Rix, explained: “The historic process ofwoodblock printing is being eradicated by digital printing so we are sopleased to present this next collection. To create these patterns, Indianladies by hand carefully prepared individual woodblocks by cutting awaywood with a knife, chisel, or sandpaper leaving the pattern. It isnecessary only to ink the block and bring it into firm and even contactwith the cloth to achieve an acceptable print, which takes years ofpractice.”
The capsule line includes some of Rixo’s most favoured silhouettesincluding the ‘Marilyn’, ‘Tamara’ and ‘Ariel’ with their flowing skirts, sweetheart necklines, and puffed sleeves, alongside new shapes, from the‘Dorothy’ pleated maxi skirt and the bohemian ‘Wendy’ blouse with frillsand billowing sleeves.
There is also a new range of dresses, including mini styles ‘Christina’and ‘Camila’ and maxi silhouettes ‘Coral’, ‘Lauren’ and ‘Silvia’, alldebuting frilled collars, pleated skirts and ruffled hemlines in botanicalhues of turquoise, crimson and emerald.
Prices range from 125 pounds for the ‘Wendy’ blouse to 225 pounds forthe ‘Tamara’ dress and will be stocked completely exclusively by Rixo, online and in-store.
